The Otolith group

It is possible to go straight and forward in every good street, you can see it and study it. But no one street it so unique and personal as our memory, our souvenirs.
We can't push time back, but we could watch it inside our head, like an old videotape. All those images that come up can be good ones or bad ones, could make us feel happy and sad, sometimes could be hard.
So this is our way into the past, which runs back, which can trick a little the time, which gives us space to think, sometimes learn, or copy.
The Otolith are a group born in London in 2000 from Anjalika Sagar and Kodwo Eshun, the name derived from a structure found in the inner ear, the one which establish our balance. Essay films brang these two persons together, they started to work in films and textes that born from magazines' and newspapers' images, and that create a collage in the middle between a private diary and collective history. From a consideration about human memory, from the Cold War to global capitalism: thousands and thousands of images, a whole universe that is quite impossible to know entirely and understand.
Otolith l is their first work, a very good experiment, where they try to put together microgravity and the historical/future narrative, three areas that they wanted to map – three temporalities. they knew they wanted it to be a science fiction film, they knew that they wanted to create this “from the future”. For them it was not just about the experience of experiencing microgravity – it was much more about the metaphor of that experience, the notion of a suspension of political will.
They succeed in create something which goes beyond images, a reflection of themselves, transforming art in a political expression that use memory as an instrument to build ideas for a future world. think about a society which is standing in the present, where is impossible to remember or to look back, thanks to apparence and aesthetics without any content.
